Here are some things to consider when fishing here in the Winter. The Salmon River is a dam-released river, so it never totally freezes over.
Salmon River Slush – Planning your Winter Steelhead fishing day around it.
Nope, it’s not the stuff you put in a cone and eat. But rather a Winter occurrence that causes certain area’s of the Salmon River to be unfishable.
Knowing current water-air temp., current water and future water flow level’s, tonight’s predicted lows with tomorrow’s highs will help you decide where to begin your day of steelhead fishing.
Sample:
Water temps. are 34 deg. up top and the flow is 335-500 cfs. Evening low temp. is 5 deg. and daytime highs are around 32 deg. (No heavy snow is forecast) The Key here is the nighttime low. Normally if the low is below 20 deg. you will have slush from Pineville down. If the low is only 20 deg. then you may not have any slush the entire length of the Salmon River.
When slush is present at these air temp’s then normally by 10-11 A.M. the lower part of the Salmon River will clear out and make steelhead fishing possible. If you’re ever not sure than do what I sometimes do and go to the short bridge in Pulaski and have a look for yourself before planning your day. If air temp’s do not rise above 20 for the daytime high then you may have slush down river all day.
If I’m planning to start my Salmon River fishing at dawn, then I’ll start up top. And then later possibly move down river once the slush has had a chance to clear. If certain areas of the river are slushed up and you are the first to arrive after it has cleared than the chances of hooking-up are good. You will be the first angler fishing to fresh steelhead that have not been disturbed or pressured. Fish-on!
This same condition occurs on the smaller Creeks and Streams around the Salmon River in early-late winter. Many an early A.M. trip has ended with a return trip when slush was not considered. I will always check air temp’s the day before I plan fishing the creeks. Often, I will arrive at 10 A.M. and fish while the last balance of slush is clearing and getting first shot at the prime spots. Fish-on!

Hand Warming Trick – Tip. This one may surprise you.
When your Winter Steelhead fishing in Pulaski NY. Most Winter Steelhead fishing anglers get cold hands in Pulaski NY. So I found the perfect Winter Steelhead fishing solution to solve that annoyance.
Wrap around “one sided adhesive athletic tape” to any metal that is exposed on your fly/spin reel that your hand or fingers come in contact with. This barrier stops that frozen, painful metal from freezing your hands off. Additionally, how about wrapping a hand warmer underneath the athletic tape at first light. Now you have a heated hand warmer where you hold your rod. Believe it or not, you can many times fish in the Winter with no gloves on at all if you add the heating pad.
Why Steelhead don’t like your Winter Popsicle Leader-Tippet’s.
Whether using a fly, spin or float system. When its reeeeelly cold out and you hold your your leader – tippet out of the water for seconds. It freezes with ice.
Ice floats, so your leader-tippet is not in the water column of your choosing. Also, your leader-tippet looks like a Popsicle com’n @ your Educated line shy steelhead.
What I do to stop this is I leave my leader – tippet in the water for 5-10 seconds, then cast it as fast as possible before it has a chance to freeze again. Or, jus recast fast, after your retrieve and dont hold your leader-tippet out of the water.

John told me a funny story about his wife and a 15 lb. Steelhead in April on the Salmon River NY. Turns out that as John rushed for the net. He ripped a big hole in his waders and cold water rushed in. When he dove for the Steelhead with the net, he fell in. When he tried to net the Steelhead for the third time he smashed his watch to pieces on a rock. Fish was netted, picture was taken and Steelhead was released.
I’m sure John’s wife was very appreciative of his efforts.
Randy, I had a lot of 2’s yesterday while steelhead fishing on the salmon river. 0 for 2 I was, it was 2 cold, 2 wet (baptized myself in 10 degree weather) and 2 hard to walk cause everything was Ice. Still , Beat the hell out of work. May all your flies get bitten! John

12/14 – Guiding Dave brought back found memories of our best day of Salmon River drift boat Steelheading ever. Last March we started out the morning fishing through the slush. By days end we had landed a BUNCH of fresh run Steelhead!
Today was a combination of re-learning, fishing, catching and having a lot of laughs. I kept reminding Dave to cast @ 12 O’clock. And that 12 O’clock was straight across the river and not up river!
I think he must a been on West coast time, forgot to turn his clock back, uses a digital watch, uses a sun dial or flunked “when the big hand is on the 12.” – yuk yuk.
Dave hooked an even combination of fresh and older Steelhead off the Salmon River drift boat today. Unfortunately, Dave took a nice fall into the water while he fought his last steelhead of the day.
(We call it a Salmon River Baptism and I “proudly” get mine every single year).
He managed to keep his tip up and was rewarded with this Salmon River drift boat steelhead. Congrats Dave!
12/15 – Dave joined me again, for another incredible non-stop adventure filled day aboard the Salmon River drift boat. Where do I begin…….. Well, how about the very first cast of the morning resulting in a steelhead! We had a fresh 25 lb. King Salmon on, that took us under a log jam and broke us off. Then a Brown Trout was an unexpected treat, it was a female and full of eggs.
Dave was in Chrome heaven by landing a bunch of steelhead – Ya-hoo!
I guess all that learn’n yesterday paid off for Today’s feast of Tantalizing Jumps, Galvanic Runs, Bent Rods and Exhilarating scream’n reel’s. Nice one Dave!
12/15 Continued – End of the Day. This HUMOROUS Salmon River drift boat highlight will be one I will not forget, nor hope to repeat anytime soon.
Remember the old saying, up a creek with out a paddle? How about up a creek with out 2 Salmon River drift boat paddles.
There is a spot in the Salmon River called the trestle hole. You drift and drop through a slot of fast white water rapids before digging heavy on your drift boat oars. To miss an intimidating 20 foot high by 6 foot wide cement pillar dead ahead. As we made the drop I was on my second BIG dig on the oars.
When SNAP went my left wooden oar blade.
With the white water rapids taking control of our fate and with 1 second before IMPACT! I YELLED – (Politely) – HOLD ON!, were going to hit the Trestle!
I noticed a slight jump in Dave’s normally calm disposition.
I then jumped into a phone booth, spun and turned into “Super Guide Man.” I used my right wooden drift boat oar blade to fend off and break the impact. Of an aluminum Salmon River drift boat crunching into a solid pillar of “I hope my life insurance policy is paid up” cement.
Yup, you guessed it, there went my second Salmon River drift boat wooden oar blade with a SNAP!
I dropped anchor and retrieved the broken blades from the water. The balance of the drift boat ride down, was one of positioning the Salmon River drift boat at the top of the runs. And then drifting with the current w/ my anchor slightly tapping bottom. And me poling the drift boat with my 10 foot net handle safely to the drift boat ramp.
Today was just another dull day in this never ending boring virtual ho-hum Adventure aboard the Salmon River drift boat.
P.S. I no longer use wooden drift boat oar blades. I went to those nice expensive light high modular graphite ones. In case you were worried about your next drift boat trip with me.
12/16 – After yesterday’s drift boat trip I was not sure if Dave was going to be a willing participant for another adventure aboard the Salmon River drift boat with new oars.
He came along with me at 6:00 A.M. with out much fuss. We left earlier than planned after yesterdays success’s. We wanted to lock-up the HOT spot. By getting there early and staking our claim to some PRIME Chrome hold’n real-estate! It worked in spades as Dave out did himself from the previous 2 days of steelhead fishing.
Dave only fell in once today, but boy was it a good one! He went up to his ears while fighting a Steelhead in the 33 degree water. He came out of it sounding like a choir boy, but with the biggest grin from ear to ear.
That’s Steelhead fishing for ya, it can be addicting.

3 Basic fishing ways to locate and target Your Salmon River Steelhead.
1. When the Steelhead are running the Salmon River. Fish there “Temporary Transitional Resting Spots” as they make there way up the Salmon River. Otherwise, you are fishing to Steelhead that are not stopping, decreasing your odds greatly. Tutorial Video on Temporary Transitional Resting Spots.
2. Once the Steelhead stop running the Salmon River to hold during the middle of the day. – (From approx. 9:30am. to 5:30pm.) Fish these “Prime Transitional Holding Spots”.

3. Once the Steelhead have stopped running the Salmon River. And have found a spot that satisfies all their survival instincts. Fish these “Prime Holding Spots” – (Pools). Normally, the most fish and they aren’t going anywhere soon. Tutorial Video on Prime Holding Spots – Pools.

4 Advanced fishing ways to locate and target Your Salmon River Steelhead.
Tutorial Video on EXPERT Fish Locating Habitat. – (These are areas I look for on the Salmon River when guiding folks like yourself.)
4. Find a spot that is a combination of all 1 thru 3. (Or, a spot that has all 3 in close proximity. So you can jump around according to what the Steelhead are telling you to do.)
5. Combine 1 thru 4 and find a spot above a looong stretch of rapids. The fish get tired after running these Salmon River rapids and will hold here for an extended period of time.
6. Include 1 thru 5 and make sure that your spot has 98% of the Steelhead in a transitional stage. Move into it. (Funnel or Pinch point in the river.)
7. My #1 Spot! Combine 1 thru 6 and pick a spot that compresses and or concentrates them. On a dime, like a sardine can, trash can lid or the size of a Volkswagen beetle or bus. This cuts down on all the guess work. And it allows to to present your offering to all the Steelhead on every drift.
8. The VERY BEST place to Steelhead fish? Is anywhere I’m not! yukyuk
By utilizing the above. You will have the most Steelhead in front of you for the greatest period of time. In a concentrated area offering you the greatest opportunity to present your offering to ALL of them. Fish ON and ON and ON! Now you know what “This Salmon River Guide” look’s for normally.
